leather, or cotton. However, most seats today are made of synthetic material.
Synthetic saddles are the most popular as they are lightweight and require
little to no maintenance.
Next, we have leather seats which are great but require a
break-in period before they become comfortable – break-in period is the time it
takes for the leather take to mold into your shape. One drawback of Leather
seats is they are not waterproof and require maintenance. You have to treat it
to protect it from cracking and from moisture. Last, we have cotton. Cotton
seats are comfortable and take little time to break-in. But, it is rarely used.
Rail Material
The material of rails used in your seat determines the
weight, flexibility, and cost. Rails connect the seat to the bike, which makes
them the essential part of the seat. Rails can be made of titanium, carbon,
alloy and steel. Most seat rails come in steel because it less expensive
compared to titanium or carbon.
Steel is strong but heavy, so if you want a light seat, then
you might want to consider carbon or titanium. An alloy such as Chromoly is
also a darling of manufacture because they are lighter than steel yet strong.
Titanium rails are strong and light and absorb vibrations, but it is expensive.
Lastly, carbon is super light and absorbs vibration. However, it is the
costliest amongst all. The lighter the material, the more expensive it is.
