Geotechnical drilling is done in many types by Foundation Engineers around the world.It is similar to building foundation construction or oil rig construction. It is done as part of a construction process or as a pre-construction process done by Foundation Engineer Dallas before the structure is built.

This work is often done by specialized companies known as geotechnical drilling services under the supervision of a geotechnical engineer or a Foundation Engineer, who makes sure that the drilling is carried out according to the specifications made in the project.

Geo technical drilling is done as part of site inspection. The site investigation will determine whether a site is suitable for the operation to be carried out. This includes drilling and removing the rock as well as soil sample for evaluating whether the soil is stable for building the proposed structure.

This is also known as foundation engineering carried out by Foundation Engineers which can be classified into two categories. They are shallow foundations and deep foundations. Foundation becomes the lowest supporting layer of the construction. According to a Foundation Engineer, there can be critical stages in the drilling and foundation investigation in the cases where the structure going to be constructed is large. Unsafe rock condition or soil condition can lead the structure to collapse, or can create dangerous situations when there is an earthquake or natural calamity. Most states have laws that stipulate that an investigation has to be performed before issuing permit to build a structure.It also says that good safety monitoring is necessary to detect any changes that develops during the construction process that can lead to great threats and problems in future.
